The first time Atlantis was mentioned was by Plato in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written sometime around 360 BC. Plato claimed that Atlantis was a real place, located beyond the Pillars of Hercules (the Straits of Gibraltar). According to Plato, Atlantis was destroyed by a natural disaster 9,000 years before his time.
What does the word Atlantis mean?
The word Atlantis comes from the Greek words “Atlas” and “Lantis”. “Atlas” means “holder of the sky” and “Lantis” means “island”. So, in essence, Atlantis means “Island of the Holding Sky”.
Some people believe that Atlantis was a real place, while others believe that it’s a fictional place. There is no definitive answer as to whether or not Atlantis was a real place. However, if it was a real place, then it was most likely located in either the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean.
